IKEA, the world’s biggest furniture maker, said Wednesday it will start making luxury sports shoes for its brand, IKEABOOT, in the future.
The move is a sign of how much the company’s once-mighty business has shifted over the past year.
The company, which has more than 40 brands in its catalog, said in January that it would be working with Nike, Adidas and other companies on new sports shoes.
IKEa has had the shoes in its line for more than two decades.
“We are happy to announce that Adidas will be making shoes for IKEACA in the near future,” IKEAA chief executive Tom Oster said in a statement.
“The shoes will be based on the iconic silhouette and features that make IKEADA one of the most respected brands in the world.”IKEA shoes are made with materials from recycled materials and recycled water, it said.IKEAA’s decision to begin producing the shoes came after the company announced plans in March to shift its brand focus to sustainable footwear and to invest in a sports brand, including an urban brand.
The shoes, which will be available in three colors: black, blue and white, are expected to hit stores in November.
Ikea has also unveiled plans to launch a new sports shoe line, called IKEAPOP, which focuses on creating a brand with “a sense of movement.”
